Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy

Research has shown the effectiveness of hypnotherapy on chronic pain and anxiety. Not only does hypnotherapy help chronic pain and anxiety but it can help with almost anything. Examples include getting rid of money blocks, depression, fixing a lazy eye, trauma, stop smoking, losing weight, etc. Many used to associate hypnotherapy with witchcraft but people came to understand that it is actually a form of getting an individual in a trance and reprogramming their subconscious minds. Most times mental and health illnesses manifest from our subconscious beliefs which can limit us from becoming our best selves. As mentioned in the literature review, a good definition of hypnosis is “a state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion” (Elkins, Barabasz, Council & Spiegel, 2015, p. 382).

Results

Hypnosis is generally found to be more effective than other common interventions such as attention, physical therapy, and education. Hypnotherapy is highly recommended because results are very fast in comparison to other interventions. The results are also guaranteed after 2-3 sessions of hypnotherapy. Results show that hypnotherapy was able to significantly decrease chronic pain such as headaches and migraines. “Moreover, the efficacy of hypnosis in reducing pain was consistently confirmed for a wide variety of different chronic pain conditions (e.g., cancer, low back pain, arthritis pain, sickle cell disease, temporomandibular pain, disability related pain)”(Elkins, 2007).
